What are hot flashes?
Hot flashes, also known as vasomotor symptoms (VMS), are sudden feelings of warmth spreading through the body, often most pronounced in the face, neck and chest. They are commonly associated with menopause, but can occur at other times as well.
Some key things to know about hot flashes:
- Caused by changes in hormone levels - Estrogen levels decline leading up to menopause, which can trigger hot flashes in some women. Fluctuations in other hormones like FSH may also play a role.
- Can range from mild to severe - Some women only experience minor hot flashes periodically while others have more frequent, intense symptoms disrupting sleep and daily life.
- Triggers - Hot flashes can be brought on by triggers like stress, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, hot weather, or warm rooms. Figuring out and avoiding personal triggers can help.
- Treatments - Hormone therapy and certain medications can provide relief. Lifestyle changes like layering clothing, avoiding triggers, and managing stress can also ease symptoms. Supplements like black cohosh may help for some women.
